Bioinformatics Engineer
We are searching for an experienced, enthusiastic Bioinformatics Engineer eager to work in a fast-paced and challenging biotech environment.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Kineta is developing a semantic web-based drug discovery platform. Under the supervision of the VP of Operations, the successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary team of scientists, technicians, and IT professionals to develop this platform and its component applications. The successful candidate will utilize semantic web technologies and approaches to implement ontology-based data warehouses and data mining applications. Depending upon experience, s/he may take the lead in development efforts or mentor other developers.

KEY ASPECTS OF THE POSITION:

• Applications definition:
  • Design and implement applications and algorithms for bioinformatics platform using semantic web concepts.
  • Analyze application for potential difficulties and/or suggest alternate approaches before development begins.
• Algorithm development and testing:
  • Take ownership of specific projects and implement novel solutions and test as necessary to bring algorithm development to successful conclusion.
  • Seek expert assistance from scientific staff or specialists to fill gaps in existing experience and synthesize methodologies into final algorithms.
  • Present results of algorithm testing for critical review and analysis.
  • Support bioinformatics collaborations with other labs
  • Design and implement applications to support internal lab
• Applications implementation:
  • Take algorithms developed personally or by others and implement as modular application within bioinformatics platform to analyze various biological data.
  • Develop interfaces and/or visualization applications for scientific end users.
  • Import existing applications and interface with bioinformatics platform.

DESIRABLE SKILLS & TRAITS:

• Advanced degree in biomedical, computer science, engineering, or scientific field.
• Experience in bioinformatics and/or computational biology.
• Experience with semantic web development technologies, with a particular emphasis on ontological development and/or data curation. Previous experience with Protg, OWL, SPARQL, and/or OBO highly desirable.
• Experience developing commercial applications.
• Significant hands-on programming experience in Windows environment. Additional experience in Unix environments highly desirable.
• Experience with IIS/ASP, XML, COM/Corba database access, n-tier development, and/or Java required. Intimate knowledge of code development and management tools as well as a major scripting language is expected.
• Statistical analysis, signal processing, or mathematical background.
• Project management or supervisory experience or understanding of product development cycles highly desirable. Ability to mentor other developers.
• Ability to communicate effectively both with IT and non-computing professionals.
• Project and personnel leadership experience with small teams.
• Experience or knowledge in bioinformatics, genomics, or genetics highly desirable.
